교수님 contact 과정 중 답장에서 궁금한 점

저는 지금 학석사를 모두 MSE를 전공 중에 있고 석사 졸업 예정입니다.

해외박사 과정을 위해 미국 교수님들과 contact 중에 있는데, 그 중 MSE faculty에 뜨는 화학과 교수님에게 메일 답장이 왔습니다. (Courtesy Appointment in Materials Engineering)

답장 중에 이렇게 왔는데,

Normally I would recommend applying to either the Chemistry or Materials Engineering program, but our current situation does not allow me to offer an RA position in Y1 which is the expectation of the MSE program. Thus, if you would be willing to submit your application to the Chemistry department and specify your interest in Materials, I believe that would be best. Chemistry does offer a summer RA program so it is possible to work in a sponsoring lab prior to the Fall semester.

그 중에 specify your interest in Materials이 무슨 뜻인가요?
화학과로 apply를 하라는건 이해가 됩니다. 그러면 MSE 전공을 할 순 없다는 뜻인걸까요? 해당 교수님의 랩실에는 MSE 전공자도 있긴 합니다.

그리고 summer RA program 을 언급한 이유도 궁금합니다. 저는 2025 Fall admission 내용만 언급하였는데, 이 부분이 어떤 뜻인지 궁금합니다.
