- 그냥 연구 재능이랑 학점이랑 상관관계가 낮은거에요. 진짜로 연구를 지망하신다면 그런 쓰잘데기 없는 편견 하루빨리 버리고 연구 자체를 바라보시길.

- 카이스트에서 학위받았지만 박사과정중 일년좀넙게 샴페인에 있었고, 지금은 졸업하고 보스턴(하버드/MIT중1)에서 포닥중입니다.
우선 선생님의 유틸리티나 식비만 봐도 알수있는게, 4B나 최소 2B 정도에서 최소생활을 하시는것일텐데.. 스스로 현재 부족함없이 생활한다고 말씀하시는게 조금 이해가 되지는 않습니다. UIUC에 있을때, 저도 연구실에서 세후 2천불정도 받으면서 생활했는데 정말 최소생활비 수준이였습니다. 지금은 세전으로 78k로 고용됐지만, 결코 와이프랑 둘이 살때 풍족하게 살지못합니다. 그나마 학교에선 거리가좀있어도 적당히 넓은집에서 가끔 외식할수있을 정도에, 중고차 15k정도 몰고다닐수있는 정도죠.
반대로 한국 박사과정에 대해서 상당히 일반화를 하시는것같은데, 한국에서 박사과정밟을때 누가 2B나 4B 같은곳에서 룸메이트랑살면서 최대한 집에서 밥해먹으면서 생활하나요.. 분명 안그런곳들도 많겠지만, 정말 대부분은 선생님이 생활하시는 환경보다는 좋은환경에서 살수는있습니다.
다만 미국에서는 고생하면서 살다보면 결국에 좋은 미래가 있기도 하고, OPT받아서 미국생활도 목표해볼수있는 등 미래때문에 가치가 큰거죠..
미국에서 박사과정 생활하면서, 한국 박사과정에 비해서 경제적으로 편하다고 하는사람 처음봤는데 솔직히 좀 놀랍네요.. 심지어 산호세에 계시면서..

From a Professor's perspective, this means that nearly two California resident students can be supported for the same cost as a foreign student. Supporting a foreign graduate student for an entire 4-6 year PhD program requires raising approximately USD $120k-$220k in grant money, depending on many factors, including whether the student receives summer support (increase), how quickly they advance to candidacy (decrease), and whether they already have a Master's degree (increase), and how quickly they finish. Admitting a graduate student is a significant financial commitment.
